David J. MacKinnon - A brief Bio

I was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada before striking out on my own for Europe at the age of nineteen. Over a twenty-year period, I lived and worked in France and Quebec, interrupted by a two year stint in China in the wake of the Tiananmen troubles and a number of extended sojourns in the Indian Ocean. At various times in my life, I have worked in the oil fields, morgues and on the assembly line, and later as a lawyer, legal translator and copy writer.

I now reside in Amstelveen with my wife Sandra who teaches Anthropology at VU University and my two children, Liam and Chloé, who attend school at Het Palet Noord.

How I came to Amstelveen

I first came to Europe looking for the Paris I had read about in the works authored by Henry Miller and Blaise Cendrars, and seen in the paintings of Cézanne, Renoir and Monet. After a number of years in the city of light, I moved from Paris to Amstelveen. I first discovered Amstelveen on bicycle and by walking through the Amsterdam forest nearby, the Braak sanctuary, the Middelpolder and alongside the Amstel river.

These places of repose and natural beauty evoked for me the Argentueil paintings of Monet, and the canvasses of the Fontainebleau forest depicted by the Barbizon school artists. I consider Amstelveen to be an ideal place to raise children, but also very suitable for a writer such as myself, due to the beauty of its setting, the quality of life and the people I have met here.

My published works

My novel Franck Robinson monte au paradis was published by Editions Denoel in 2004. Editions Denoël is the publisher of Céline, Henry Miller, Norman Mailer, J.B. Priestly, Russell Banks and of a writer who is my personal literary hero, the one-armed French poet vagabond, Blaise Cendrars.

The Flagship of Eternal Stupidity is the second book in the Graveyard of the Innocents trilogy, and was published in 2008 by Invisible Hand Legacy Books. Leper Tango is being released by Guernica Editions, Toronto Canada, in May 2004.

Cendrars' Quatrain, my historical thriller on the life and times of Blaise Cendrars, was recently released in the United States.

The Story behind Cendrars' Quatrain

Cendrars died in 1961, but his legend is growing by the year within France. Blaise Cendrars is considered to be the co-founder of French modern poetry, alongside Rimbaud and Appollinaire. Tragedy, however, struck him at the peak of his glory.

On September 28, 1915, Cendrars had his writer's arm shot off by a German machine gunner during the Battle of Navarin Farm on the plains of Champagne. That tragic event and how Cendrars converted it into his rebirth as one of the twentieth century's greatest adventurers and geniuses is the real life tale behind this historical thriller. And despite his extraordinary life and work, Cendrars - foreign legionnaire, scriptwriter, war reporter, crony of Modigliani, Braque, Fernand Léger, Picasso and of Chaplin - remains unknown to English-speaking readers.

Here is the story of Cendrars' Quatrain:

During the 1940s, Blaise Cendrars, a one-armed, vagabond French poet who helped found modern French poetry, expressed the desire to have his remains scattered over the Sargasso Sea in a quatrain:

I will be a man fulfilled if, when my time comes,

I can disappear anonymously and without regret,

At the originating point of our world, the Sargasso Sea,

Where life first burst from the depths of the ocean floor towards the sun.

His wish would remain unrealized; in 1961, Cendrars died penniless and was buried in the vault of a friend in a Paris cemetery.

Some sixty years later, writer, ex-solicitor, and "deal facilitator" Jack Fingon stumbles upon Cendrars' quatrain and sees in it a potentially lucrative venture. He decides to grant the poet's wishes, proposing to transport Cendrars' ashes to the Sargasso Sea with journalists and a film crew in tow. But when resistance to his proposal stokes his curiosity, Fingon makes a shocking discovery: Cendrars was disinterred and cremated thirty-three years after his death. Now it is up to Fingon to determine why Cendrars has been left by his protectors to vagabond in the hereafter.
