In October 2000 The Japan Women's club in Amstelveen gave 400 cherry blossom trees to the population of the Netherlands. This, on the occasion of 400 years relationship between Japan and the Netherlands. Since that time the Japanese embassy in The Hague has organised with a number of organisations, among which The Japan Women's club, each year around the end of March 'hanamimatsuri ' (Cherry Blossom Festival) in the cherry garden in Amstelveen. The cherry garden is situated in the so called Forest of Amsterdam, in Amstelveen.
The festival started in front of the Town Hall of Amstelveen, where one could buy Japanese presents and drinks. There was also a man who in a short workshop showed, how to make anniversary cards from egg boxes in a simple way.
As the ambassador of Japan in the Netherlands, Mr Kyoji Komachi and his wife had arrived, all the guests, together with the mayor of Amstelveen Mr. Jan van Zanen, walked to the cherry garden. The weather was ideal, splendidly sunny and over more than hundred invited guests had a beautiful walk in the spring forest. Unfortunately the weather had not been warm enough, so the blossom was not yet in flowering.
The Honoraire consul General of Japan, Mr Marc Verbeek gave a speech concerning the relations the Netherlands with Japan. Then Mr Komachi and Van Zanen posed at a cherry tree for a photo-shoot.
Then the host and the guests returned to the Town Hall. After reciprocal addressed speeches, a real oriental environment was created by a cultural show of two Japanese artists and a Women’s Chorus. After this show the official part of the festival was concluded and everyone could enjoy the sake, real Japanese beer and sushi.
